Role Qualities/Attributes: Dazai is one of the most morally neutral characters in the series. He's worked for the bad guys (Port Mafia) and the good guys (Armed Detective Agency) with equal ease. He's both logical and emotional, community and individual focused, neither good nor bad. Thus being a Familiar suits him. In Folkmore, the ability to enhance rather than nullify abilities would be a good experience for him. Being able to shift forms would also allow him a chance to just exist in a different way and experience the world differently in a beneficial way for his mental health. He often presents as nihilistic or else works hard to mask it. Being able to just be would be good.

- What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?
- His defining relationship, although relatively short is the friendship he had with Oda Sakunosuke. They definitely seem like an unlikely pair but Oda also appears to be the first person to actively accept him without some other motive. Dazai tried everything he knew how to make Oda leave him for dead, but Oda didn't cave and that is honestly where it seems to have started. Oda having no expectations of him and actively beating him at his own game in a way he couldn't stop, was a new experience. Not to mention the fact Oda seemed to see right through all of his masks. Dazai's relationship with Oda was pivotal in his move from the Mafia to the ADA as well, to honor Oda's last request.
- What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story? One headcanon I have is that Dazai doesn't truly consider himself human and with the level of damage he consistently displays, it's a trait he has in common with Fyodor and a much younger Ranpo. These three provide something of a spectrum of the path genius can take. His gift of nullification also presents a unique situation given he's the walking anti-gift. Dazai's own course veers far closer to Fyodor's than Ranpo's, although unlike Fyodor, he places more value on the lives surrounding him and hides behind a much more jovial mask and his suicidal ideation. However, he demonstrates on many occasions, while he's willing to risk his life for those close to him, he's not actively seeking to die. The masks help keep him from building more intimate relationships, though, Dazai keeping his true nature close to his own chest. His self isolation is one of the issues I plan to use his time in Folkmore to address. Being out of the game will allow him time to stop and consider other paths and build more honest relationships.
- What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not? Dazai has a minimal intrinsic moral code, such as not harming children if possible. He doesn't have qualms with killing, torture, and other violence as he's taken those actions without regret. However, he adopts and follows moral codes of the organizations he works for. Within the Port Mafia, that moral code included following the code of the Port Mafia with heavy retribution to those who crossed them and a harsh attitude with subordinates who go against orders. None of that makes him blink an eye. When he changes sides, however, he chooses to act in a far more restrained manner: using other means before violence when possible, protecting the general public, and mentoring younger detectives with greater kindness. It's in line with the principal that everyone in the agency has to pass a test showing they will protect others. All that said, that code is something he has an easier time breaking when he deems necessary than others might. When particularly dangerous foes threaten his people, Yokohama, and the world, he's quite willing to get his hands dirty (and to leave other people's hands clean).
- Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind? Like many people, Dazai falls in the middle of the spectrum on forgiveness vs. holding a grudge. He doesn't hold a grudge easily. A person has to do something especially damaging to earn that level of prolonged hatred. There are three people he's demonstrated that sort of ire towards. Mori Ougai and Sakaguchi Ango for their roles in the death of Oda Sakunosuke and Fyodor Dostoyevsky for targeting and harming everyone he values as well as Yokohama as a whole. Overall, none of his grudges or personal feelings get in the way of the greater good/his primary goals. He's worked with the Port Mafia when the Armed Detective Agency collaborates with them to face larger threats, despite Mori leading them, even as he refuses to forgive Mori himself and refuses overtures to return to the Port Mafia. If the day ever comes to settle up, he'll make sure people who've wronged him have their debts paid.
